Egypt winter time transition and business regulations
Overview
Egypt is preparing to transition from daylight saving time to winter time in late October 2026. Under Law No. 24 of 2023, the shift is scheduled to occur at midnight on Friday, October 30, 2026, when clocks will be set back by 60 minutes. This government strategy aims to rationalize energy consumption by reducing the requirement for artificial lighting during shorter winter days.
While the official time shift occurs in late October, new winter operating hours for commercial activities took effect on Friday, September 25, 2026. These regulations, intended to conserve energy and regulate public movement, establish the following schedules:
General shops and malls open at 7:00 AM daily, closing at 10:00 PM on weekdays and 11:00 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and official holidays. Restaurants, cafes, and bazaars operate from 5:00 AM until midnight, with extensions to 1:00 AM during weekends and holidays. Takeaway and home delivery services are permitted to operate 24 hours a day.
Workshops and craft businesses are scheduled to operate from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, while banks will observe working hours from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Essential services such as pharmacies and grocery stores remain exempt from these specific restrictions to ensure continuous access. The winter time period is expected to last six months, concluding in late April 2027.
