Egyptian Journalists Syndicate credential disputes
Overview
The Egyptian Journalists Syndicate has initiated actions to address the emergence of “fake entities” that issue unauthorized professional identification. Initially, leadership met with the General Syndicate of Workers in Press, Printing, Media, Culture and Antiquities to discuss disputes regarding credentials that use abbreviated or altered titles, which Khaled El-Balshy noted creates “significant confusion for the public and authorities regarding the legal standing of the cardholders.”
Following these discussions, the syndicate announced more formal measures to combat impersonation. This includes the establishment of a permanent committee to monitor illegal organizations and pursue legal action. The syndicate is also coordinating with the Ministry of Interior to ensure that professions like ‘journalist’ or ‘editor’ are not listed on national ID cards without an official syndicate stamp.
Further steps involve working with the National Social Insurance Authority to review insurance statuses and with universities to verify academic qualifications. Additionally, the syndicate has referred five members for potential removal from official rolls for failing to meet membership requirements, asserting its role as the sole legal representative of Egyptian journalists.
