El Niño predictability and forecasting research

Overview

Researchers from CSIRO and the University of Melbourne have identified a method to improve the long-range prediction of El Niño and La Niña events. By analyzing over 7,500 historical ENSO forecasts, the study published in Science Advances determined that the initial state of the Pacific Ocean is a critical factor for accuracy. Specifically, predictions initiated during La Niña conditions remain consistently reliable even when forecasting up to 12 months in advance, whereas forecasts made during neutral ocean conditions are significantly less dependable.

As this research emerges, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is monitoring current developments, indicating a high probability of a strong El Niño event. There is a 75 percent chance that the period between October and December could be stronger than any El Niño recorded since 1950 on certain relative indices. Such patterns are expected to shift global storm tracks, potentially causing droughts in Africa and India, exceptional rainfall along the East African coast, and various other global weather shifts.
