Elderly loneliness support initiatives in Spain
Overview
Social organizations in Spain are implementing various initiatives to combat loneliness and social isolation among the elderly.
In Mijas, the City Council and Fundación Harena have expanded the ‘Mijas con alma y SolidarEDAD’ program. Supported by a 10,000 euro contribution from Fundación ‘la Caixa’, the initiative uses a volunteer network to provide weekly sessions, including home visits, walks, and communal activities. Mayor Ana Mata characterized loneliness as “one of the great scourges that society suffers from.”
Broader efforts across Spain include Fundació Avismón, which has spent 30 years providing home accompaniment and medical follow-ups through 500 volunteers. Additionally, the ‘Siempre Acompañados’ program, a collaboration between Fundación La Caixa and Cruz Roja Lérida, offers psychological support and group activities to help seniors regain autonomy and overcome social fragility.
