Electoral integrity and worker safety investigations in Para

In Paraíba, Brazil, reports emerged of postal workers facing physical aggression and threats while delivering election materials. In Campina Grande, a mail carrier was reportedly assaulted during the distribution of campaign flyers, leading to a police investigation.

Following these incidents, the Brazilian Federal Police launched ‘Operação Zona de Influência’ to investigate allegations of criminal factions negotiating electoral support. Authorities are examining whether criminal groups leveraged territorial control to secure benefits for candidates, including payments to leaders, funding for community centers, and public administration positions. The operation has resulted in the seizure of R$ 220,000 and the precautionary removal of a public official, as investigators probe potential crimes involving money laundering, criminal organization, and electoral offenses.

The investigation has identified specific targets, including state deputy Caio Roberto (MDB) and Júnior Pires, the chief secretary of Procon in João Pessoa. The court has ordered a 90-day precautionary removal of Pires from his position. Following the operation, Pires requested his resignation to focus on his legal defense, while categorically denying involvement with organized crime. State Deputy Caio Roberto also denied any links to criminal organizations, stating he would continue his campaign with “absolute tranquility.”

In João Pessoa, political reactions remain divided. Supporters of Mayor Leo Bezerra have defended the administration’s integrity, while opposition leaders have questioned the extent of ties between public administration and criminal factions due to the frequency of police operations involving municipal secretariats.

Concurrently, the Sintect-PB union reported a surge in violence, including verbal abuse and physical assault, against mail carriers delivering political campaign materials. This has led to protests in João Pessoa, as workers demand increased security.
