Electric scooter accidents involving minors in Greece
Overview
A series of serious electric scooter accidents involving minors has prompted increased police scrutiny in Greece.
On September 5, a 16-year-old was seriously injured in Glyka Nera after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter. The driver, a 19-year-old, underwent a breathalyzer test as traffic police investigated the collision.
Following this, a 14-year-old girl sustained severe head injuries on the island of Tinos after losing balance while riding as a passenger behind a 15-year-old. After receiving emergency treatment and being transferred to a children’s hospital in Athens, she was extubated and expected to leave intensive care.
In response to these incidents, Athens Traffic Police have intensified inspections. Authorities are targeting minors who violate traffic codes and businesses that rent scooters to individuals under the age of 17, which is prohibited by existing legislation.
