Overview

Electrical infrastructure failures have caused significant power outages in Chile and Cuba.

In Chile, disruptions were reported in Chiu Chiu due to infrastructure failures, resulting in an 11-hour outage and loss of mobile connectivity. Later, a transformer failure at the San Enrique Substation in Lo Barnechea interrupted electricity to several mountain winter centers, including Farellones, El Colorado, La Parva, and Valle Nevado.

In Cuba, a substation fire in the Ranchuelo municipality left Jicotea without electricity for five days. This was compounded by technical issues at the Felton Thermoelectric Plant, where Unit 1 was disconnected from the National Electric System following the discovery of a crack near the boiler dome and over 100 anomalies in the turbogroup. The plant's outage has contributed to a significant generation deficit in the country.
