Electricity grid reinforcement in Abidjan
Overview
The Compagnie Ivoirienne d'Électricité (CIE) initiated a program in August 2026 to reinforce the high-voltage electricity network in southern Abidjan. The project involves upgrading the Bia-Sud substation to 225 kV and replacing conductors on the 90 kV Vridi–Bia-Sud 2 connection to address rising electricity demand caused by heatwaves and an increasing subscriber base.
As part of these reinforcement works, intermittent power disruptions were scheduled for several southern districts, including Marcory, Koumassi, Port-Bouët, Anoumabo, and Vridi. Specific outages in Abidjan were slated for late August, affecting both residential areas and the Koumassi industrial zone. Additional work related to the commissioning of the substation is expected to continue through November 2026.
