Elena Rybakina wins US Open and maintains world No. 1

Overview

Elena Rybakina has won her first US Open title, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in a three-set final (6-4, 5-7, 6-2). This victory marks Rybakina’s third Grand Slam title and her second major of 2026, making her only the second woman to defeat a world No. 1 in multiple Grand Slam finals in a single season, a feat previously matched only by Steffi Graf in 1995.

Her US Open campaign began with a straight-sets victory over American wildcard Thea Frodin, marking her return from an Achilles tendon injury sustained in Cincinnati. Rybakina later reached her first US Open quarterfinal by defeating Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4. Following her championship success, Rybakina withdrew from the Billie Jean King Cup finals in Shenzhen, citing physical exhaustion and the need to regain fitness.

As of October 12, 2026, Rybakina has maintained her position as the WTA world number one for five consecutive weeks, holding 9,696 points and leading second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka by 2,146 points. The rankings have seen other significant shifts, including Mirra Andreeva rising to a career-high third place, overtaking Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, who dropped to fourth and fifth respectively. Additionally, Zheng Qinwen’s victory at the Beijing Open has propelled her to world number 23.

Following the Wuhan Open, Rybakina has been confirmed as one of the eight qualifiers for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, scheduled for November 8–15, 2026.
