Eli Lilly EloraTZP obesity drug clinical trials

Overview

Eli Lilly has reported results from Phase 2b clinical trials for EloraTZP, a combination therapy involving eloralinantide and tirzepatide designed to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Data presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes annual meeting indicates that the combination therapy targets multiple hormonal pathways, including amylin, GIP, and GLP-1 receptors. In a 48-week study of 367 participants, the highest dosage group achieved an average weight reduction of 23.3%, or approximately 24.6 kg. This outperformed the weight loss seen in participants receiving tirzepatide alone (14.8%) or eloralinantide alone (11.1% to 12.3%).

The therapy also showed improvements in glycemic control, with the highest dosage group seeing an average HbA1c reduction of 2.9 percentage points. However, the combination therapy was linked to higher gastrointestinal side effects, resulting in treatment discontinuation rates between 10.8% and 27.0%, compared to 2.9% for the single-agent group. Eli Lilly intends to begin Phase 3 trials for EloraTZP by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Recent analysis of the trial data highlights the dose-dependent efficacy of the treatment: middle doses resulted in roughly 20% weight loss, while the lowest doses saw an average reduction of 13.2%. Analysts noted that weight loss exceeding 18% would represent a “significant success” for the company. Eloralinantide functions by mimicking amylin, a hormone that signals fullness after eating. These findings occur alongside broader developments in obesity treatments, such as the phase 2 ZUPREME 1 trial of the amylin analogue petrelintide, which saw up to 10.7% weight loss, and phase 3 results for retatrutid, which showed a 25% average weight loss after 80 weeks.
