Emma Coronel legal status and image rights dispute

Emma Coronel Aispuro, the former wife of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, announced the early conclusion of her supervised release in the United States. A federal judge terminated her probation one year ahead of the original 2027 schedule following an investigation into her conduct, which reportedly showed compliance with all requirements. Coronel declared during a live stream, “My legal problems, my legal situation that started six years ago, have ended. No more probation, no more legal problems. I am internationally free.”

In a separate legal matter, Coronel has filed a lawsuit against the publisher Penguin Random House through the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). The lawsuit concerns the unauthorized use of her photograph on the cover of the book “Emma y las otras señoras del narco” by journalist Anabel Hernández. Her attorney, Hugo Torres, stated that the legal action does not challenge the book’s content but focuses on the exploitation of her image for marketing purposes, alleging a photograph from her Instagram profile was used and modified without permission.
