Energy storage infrastructure investments in Romania

Energy infrastructure investments in Romania have focused on expanding energy storage capabilities to manage renewable energy variability.

In late August 2026, Energy Data announced a 70 million lei investment to construct a complex in Săcele, near Brașov. The 2.6-hectare facility is planned to include a photovoltaic plant, a transformer station, and 135 Li-Ion batteries providing 300 MW of power and 600 MWh of storage capacity. The system is designed to function bidirectionally, absorbing surplus grid energy and discharging it during high demand.

Following this, Hidroelectrica announced a larger investment of 297 million lei dedicated to an energy storage system at Porțile de Fier II. On September 10, 2026, the company confirmed the project, which has been awarded to Synergy Construct, will involve a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an installed capacity of 64 MW and a storage capacity of 434.76 MWh. CEO Iulius-Dan Plaveti described the investment as a strategic move to support the energy transition by providing flexibility to the National Electricity System and optimizing generation profiles over 24-hour periods.
