Energy transition and infrastructure in Ravenna

Overview

The energy landscape in Ravenna is undergoing a transition from traditional fossil fuel extraction toward renewable and decarbonization technologies.

Historically, the region has been a central hub for Italy’s energy development, anchored by Eni’s operations ranging from the 1952 ‘Ravenna Terra’ discovery to offshore drilling. Current strategic efforts include the ‘Ravenna CCS’ project, which aims to use depleted gas fields for carbon capture and storage to sequester industrial emissions.

Complementing these industrial shifts, new renewable infrastructure is being established, such as the Agrisfera biomethane plant in Mandriole. This facility, representing an investment of over 10 million euros, converts biomass into biomethane for injection into the Snam network, a move estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 9,000 tons annually.
