Enugu Rangers advance to CAF Champions League second round

Overview

Enugu Rangers, the Nigerian Premier Football League champions, are preparing for a CAF Champions League preliminary round match against AS Sobemap of Benin Republic. The first-leg encounter was scheduled to take place at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, which the club is using as a temporary home while renovations continue at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

Rangers chairman Amobi Ezeaku emphasized the need for a convincing victory to avoid complacency and secure an advantage before the return fixture. In their opening fixture at the Moshood Abiola Sports Complex, Rangers International played to a 1-1 draw against AS Sobemap. Although Iwundu Chidozie scored an early goal in the 23rd minute, the visitors managed to secure an equalizer, leaving the tie balanced ahead of the second leg.

Following the initial draw, the second leg was held in Lomé, Togo, where the two sides played to another 1-1 draw. With the aggregate score tied at 2-2, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout. Despite missing their initial kick, Rangers secured a 5-4 victory on penalties to advance to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side will now await the winner of the tie between Algeria’s MC Alger and Niger’s ASN Nigelec to determine their next opponent.
