Environmental activism and industrial oversight in Danilovgr
Overview
Tensions have emerged in Montenegro regarding industrial oversight and environmental protection in the Danilovgrad region. In late September, biologist Vuk Iković, representing the Preokret citizens' group, reported being barred from a site inspection of the Primato P slaughterhouse and the Mondal cement plant. The inspection, organized by the European Union Delegation, reportedly excluded Iković despite his role in representing the public interest. Iković raised concerns regarding the transparency of these visits and the potential pollution of the Zeta River.
By late October, the situation escalated following an incident at the ‘Naša Farma’ facility, owned by Voli Trade. Activists Vuk Iković and Aleksandar Dragićević were taken to the Danilovgrad Security Department for questioning by police. While Voli Trade reported that the activists entered the property without authorization, damaged a protective fence, and bypassed biosecurity measures to film the site, the activists maintained they were documenting the improper disposal of animal waste and environmental contamination.
The Human Rights Action (HRA) organization has joined the activists, raising concerns regarding the privacy and integrity of their digital data after farm employees reportedly seized their mobile phones. While the Police Administration clarified that the activists were not arrested, a state prosecutor determined that the actions of Dragićević and Iković did not constitute a criminal offense prosecuted ex officio. The prosecutor noted that Voli Trade may pursue the matter through a private lawsuit. The Nikšić Society of Young Ecologists and the URA movement have expressed support for the activists, calling for transparency regarding the farm's environmental impact.
