Environmental and regulatory management in Montenegro and|
Overview
In Montenegro and Serbia, authorities continue to focus on regulatory enforcement, public safety, and environmental conservation.
In Montenegro, coastal inspections during the tourist season have identified significant regulatory violations. Minister Milutin Butorović reported that 49 beach locations failed to maintain the required 50 percent free space from furniture, resulting in 69 misdemeanor warrants totaling 36,400 euros. Additionally, over 100 businesses were found operating without proper permits, leading to 40 activity bans and four facility sealing orders, with fines totaling 93,400 euros.
Law enforcement in Montenegro has intensified its focus on environmental crimes and illegal land use. In Jelovica, police discovered 1,018 cubic meters of illegally felled timber, valued at approximately 140,000 euros, prompting an investigation by the Berane police and prosecutor’s office. In Bijelo Polje, two individuals face criminal charges for forest theft involving unauthorized felling of beech, birch, and oak trees. In Mojkovac, a resident was charged with the illegal occupation of state land and unauthorized construction of an agricultural facility in Brskovo.
Authorities are also investigating cases of animal cruelty, including an incident in Danilovgrad where a Japanese Akita was wounded by gunfire, classified by prosecutors as “animal killing and torture,” and a separate case in Budva involving an injured cat.
Regarding environmental policy, Montenegro’s Minister of Ecology Damjan Ćulafić announced plans for public discussions on potentially expanding Durmitor National Park. In Serbia, local officials in Užice worked to remove a sunken raft from the Đetinja river, while ministers addressed concerns following wildfires in Deliblatska Peščara, denying claims that the fires would lead to land rezoning.
