Environmental investigation in Parghelia, Calabria

Overview

Authorities in Parghelia, Calabria, initiated an investigation into wastewater disposal at the Costa dei Monaci residential complex. Following inspections by the Carabinieri and technical support from Arpacal, officials seized a sewage system, an underground structure, and a bar attached to the Le Fornaci beach club.

By late August, the coastal waters in the Sabbie Bianche / Fornaci area were declared to be in legal compliance following monitoring by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Vibo Valentia and regional agencies. As a result, Mayoral Ordinance n. 25 revoked the previous ban on bathing, restoring suitability to the area.

Despite the restoration of bathing rights, the local opposition group ‘Guardare al Futuro’ has called for greater transparency. The group highlighted previous municipal orders regarding the urgent need for repairs to sewage lifting pumps, network maintenance, and the remediation of rainwater pipes affected by sewage mixing.
