Environmental monitoring and health assessments in Modena

Environmental and public health monitoring in the Modena region has focused on industrial emissions and site remediation. In Solignano, the Ausl di Modena released a technical report regarding odor emissions from the ceramic industrial hub. The assessment concluded that there is “no significant health risk to the population” from prolonged exposure to detected substances, even under cautious scenarios. While odors may cause short-term irritative disturbances, they were not deemed inherently toxic.

Broadening the scope of environmental oversight, officials reported that 23 sites within the municipality are undergoing remediation or monitoring processes. These include sites listed by Arpae and two locations under direct municipal jurisdiction. Regarding public health, epidemiological data for the period between 2020 and 2024 indicated that the incidence of tumors in Modena was slightly lower than the provincial average, with officials stating there was “no excess mortality for tumor pathologies compared to the provincial average.” Monitoring of groundwater is expected to continue alongside these remediation efforts.
