Environmental summits in Kigali, Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda, is set to host two significant environmental summits in late 2026.

In October, the Carbon Markets Africa Summit (CMAS) will convene participants from 45 countries, including 24 African nations. The event aims to connect African policymakers and project developers with international investors and financiers to discuss sectors such as nature-based solutions, agriculture, and carbon removals. Ibrahim Shelleng of the Nigerian government noted the summit offers an opportunity for “continental ownership in shaping the future of carbon markets for the benefit of Africa.”

Following this, from November 2 to 6, Rwanda will host the 38th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP38). This summit will bring together governments and industry representatives to assess progress on ozone layer protection and the implementation of the Kigali Amendment, which targets the reduction of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Environment Minister Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye stated the meeting will allow nations to review steps taken since the amendment's adoption and identify future actions regarding technological solutions and international cooperation.
