Ethiopian Airlines expansion in Mozambique

Overview

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo announced plans to utilize Ethiopian Airlines' expertise to restructure the national carrier, Mozambique Airlines (LAM), to improve operational capacity and regional competitiveness.

Following high-level discussions between President Chapo and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopian Airlines inaugurated a new regular international flight service to Nacala International Airport on October 27. The Boeing 737-800 service connects Nacala to Addis Ababa via Blantyre, Malawi, operating three times per week.

This new route represents the first regular international connection for Nacala since the airport opened in 2014. The expansion is intended to strengthen the Nacala Corridor by linking air transport with regional rail, road, and deep-water port networks to facilitate trade for landlocked neighbors like Malawi and Zambia. Local officials noted the expansion supports the region's Special Economic Zone and provides northern Mozambique with access to over 130 global destinations.
