Ethnic conflict and security instability in Manipur
Overview
The security situation in Manipur remains volatile due to persistent ethnic clashes between the Naga, Kuki-Zo, and Meitei communities. These conflicts have resulted in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands of people.
In late September, the Eastern Army Commander visited the region to assess security strategies and engage with community leaders to encourage neutrality. This followed violence in the Kangpokpi and Tamenglong districts involving arson and retaliatory killings.
By mid-October, the Manipur Chief Minister and the Border Security Force Director General met to review law and order following a wave of violence in three hill districts that caused at least nine deaths in a single week. Security efforts continue to focus on managing instability and implementing rehabilitation programs.
