EU-Mauritania fishing agreement renewal negotiations

Overview

The renewal of the fishing agreement between the European Union and Mauritania has become a priority for Spanish authorities as the current protocol approaches its expiration in mid-November.

At the regional level, the Junta de Andalucía announced over 9.5 million euros in aid to support the local fishing and aquaculture sectors. This includes more than 8.5 million euros to compensate for temporary halts in Mediterranean and Gulf of Cádiz fishing, alongside funding for vessel equipment and environmental services. The regional government has urged the Spanish central government to seek transitional measures to protect the local fleet, which includes 25 vessels, should a new pact not be reached.

Nationally, Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has called on the European Commission to accelerate negotiations. Planas emphasized that the agreement is vital for mutual interests and sustainable fishing, noting that several other EU member states also share an interest in concluding the protocol to prevent fishing fleets from being excluded from Mauritanian waters.
