European affordable hybrid SUV market

Overview

In mid‑July, reports highlighted a range of compact hybrid SUVs priced under €27,000 in France and Spain, including models from Fiat, MG, BYD and Hyundai. The focus was on low purchase and running costs that meet low‑emission zone requirements.

A week later, Opel (Stellantis) introduced the Frontera line, adding a seven‑seat mild‑hybrid SUV and promoting steep discount programmes in Hungary and Ireland. The launch emphasized multiple power‑train options, modern tech features and targeted price‑sensitive buyers, extending the affordability narrative to a new segment of larger, family‑oriented hybrids.

By late August, Opel expanded this strategy by introducing the Frontera Start, an entry-level version aimed at increasing affordability. In Germany, this model is priced at €21,990, making it the brand’s most affordable vehicle. The Start trim includes a 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine with a manual transmission, though hybrid and fully electric options remain available. Despite the lower price point, the model retains standard features such as a 10-inch driver information display and lane departure warning assistants to position itself as a pragmatic family SUV.

The Frontera lineup now features four trim levels: Start, Edition, GS, and Ultimate. The engine range includes a 100 HP 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol engine, a 110 HP mild-hybrid version, and a fully electric version providing 113 HP with a 43 kWh usable battery. Standard equipment for the Start trim also includes a six-way adjustable Intelli-Seat, air conditioning, rear parking sensors, and a smartphone docking station. Additionally, Opel is offering significant discounts in the Turkish market, with price reductions of up to 351,000 TL on models such as the Frontera Hybrid 1.2 145 e-DCT6 Edition.
