Recent data indicates the Eurozone economy is showing unexpected resilience, with the S&P Global PMI index rising to 53.1. However, heavy industry faces severe pressure; in the Czech Republic, steel producers report that gas prices have nearly tripled since spring due to Middle East tensions. Adding to economic complexity, the euro has faced significant downward pressure against the US Dollar. This decline is driven by a widening interest rate differential, political instability, and energy price volatility. Throughout September, the US dollar maintained significant strength against the euro. By October 2026, European gas prices have more than doubled since the start of the year, with the Dutch TTF benchmark reaching approximately 73 euros per megawatt hour. In Austria, gas storage levels sit at 68 percent, notably lower than the 84 percent recorded during the same period the previous year. Michael Strebl of E-Control noted that while winter supply is secured, high costs are expected. As the heating season begins, German gas storage levels have reached approximately 58 percent, a level not seen in 15 years.
