European cheese recalls due to Listeria risk
Overview
On August 26, 2026, the supermarket chain Jumbo issued product recalls in the Netherlands and Belgium due to potential Listeria contamination in its cheese products. In the Netherlands, the recall included Jumbo brand organic brie (expiration date September 1, 2026) and Jumbo Gorgonzola Dolce. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) identified Gorgonzola batches with EAN code 8718452637508 and expiration dates of September 3, 8, and 10, 2026.
In Belgium, the recall specifically targeted 200-gram plastic packages of Jumbo Gorgonzola Dolce (EAN 8718452637508). Affected batches include 126G15, 126G20, and 126G22, with expiration dates of September 3, 8, or 10. This action was taken in coordination with the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca).
On August 27, 2026, the Italian Ministry of Health issued a precautionary recall for specific batches of Gorgonzola DOP cheese. The recall involves 200-gram prepackaged portions produced by Granarolo S.p.A. at the Casalino plant in Novara for Centrale del Latte d'Italia Spa. The affected products include the Tapporosso (Centrale del Latte di Torino) and Idal (Gorgonzola Dolce) brands, specifically those sharing batch number L126G22 with an expiration date of September 5, 2026. These products were widely communicated through Carrefour supermarkets.
In all instances, health authorities advised consumers not to consume the affected products and to return them to the point of sale for a refund or replacement. While no public cases of listeriosis have been reported in connection with the Italian batch, authorities warned that Listeria can survive and multiply even at refrigerator temperatures. The bacteria pose significant health risks to vulnerable populations, including the elderly, infants, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.
