European cross-border drug seizure operations
Overview
Law enforcement agencies in Europe have conducted significant operations targeting cross-border drug smuggling and customs violations.
In a coordinated international effort between late September and early October involving Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, authorities seized over 150 kilograms of cannabis, including marijuana and hashish, alongside five kilograms of cocaine. The operation, which utilized road, rail, air, and postal networks, also uncovered various violations of immigration, weapons, and traffic laws.
In a separate incident at the Bajakovo border, Croatian customs and police intercepted a truck traveling from Serbia to Ireland. Using X-ray equipment, officials discovered over 83,000 undeclared tablets, including 44,600 Bensedin tablets containing diazepam, hidden within a shipment of medicines. The driver faced fines for customs and excise violations, and criminal investigations were initiated regarding the unauthorized trafficking of controlled drugs.
On October 22, Austrian authorities dismantled an international trafficking route after seizing approximately 200 kilograms of cannabis from a Bulgarian-registered truck. The shipment, which had traveled from Spain through France and either Italy or Slovenia, was destined for distribution in Austria, Slovenia, and Greece. Two individuals were arrested in Traiskirchen, including a 58-year-old Bulgarian driver and a 30-year-old Slovenian resident. The estimated black market value of the cannabis exceeds 2 million euros. While 6 kilograms of a substance suspected to be cocaine were found, laboratory analysis confirmed it was a non-active imitation. The investigation involves the Austrian prosecution in Graz, Europol, and agencies in Bulgaria and Spain.
