European electric bus fleet expansion
Overview
Public transportation authorities across Europe are increasingly adopting electric bus fleets to modernize transit and reduce emissions.
In Germany and Italy, transit providers are testing and introducing zero-emission vehicles. The Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft in Germany is testing electric minibuses with plans to double its electric fleet by 2027-2028. In Lecce, Italy, SGM is introducing six new electric buses and seeking funding to modernize the city’s trolleybus network.
In Central Europe, the transition continues with operational successes and new cross-border services. In the Czech Republic, the Dopravní společnost Zlín – Otrokovice reported that its new electric buses are operating with costs approximately 50% lower than diesel alternatives. Additionally, a primarily electric line has been launched between Vienna and Bratislava, utilizing Chinese-made Yutong electric buses supported by new charging infrastructure and photovoltaic systems.
