European energy security and transition initiatives

Overview

Energy security and transition initiatives are being pursued through both local and regional cooperation models in Poland and Northern/Central Europe.

At the local level, the municipalities of Odolanów, Sulmierzyce, and Przygodzice have secured nearly 50 million PLN in funding from the Ministry of Climate and Environment to establish an energy cluster. Led by Odolanów, the project focuses on a local ecosystem of production and storage, including over 600 photovoltaic installations with storage units to ensure long-term energy security for the Greater Poland communes.

On a broader scale, ORLEN and 13 other European energy firms have formalized the Baltic Energy Initiative. This partnership involves signatories from Poland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Norway. Participating entities include Eesti Energia, Enefit, Fortum, KN Energies, DNV Energy Systems, Topsoe, Siemens Energy, Adven, Steady Energy, P2X Solutions, Latvenergo, Gasgrid Finland, and Orsted.

The initiative aims to strengthen regional competitiveness and energy security through joint projects in offshore wind, LNG and BioLNG integration, regional hydrogen market development, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and nuclear energy technologies such as small modular reactors (SMR). ORLEN CEO Ireneusz Fąfara stated that the initiative allows companies to combine competencies, infrastructure, and investment potential to better utilize international financing and shape the direction of the energy transition.
