European fruit and vegetable market price fluctuations
Overview
During week 43, fruit and vegetable markets in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United Kingdom experienced significant price volatility.
In the Dutch and Belgian markets, tomato prices rose sharply at VBT auctions due to lower volumes, with vine tomatoes reaching 2.19 euros per kilo. Strawberry and mango prices also trended upward following the expiration of supermarket promotions. While cucumber and blueberry prices saw decreases in some regions, eggplant prices remained low due to high supply volumes.
In the United Kingdom, wholesale strawberry prices saw a substantial increase of 46%, rising from £3.24 to £4.73 per kg. Blackberries and raspberries also experienced price hikes of 37% and 21%, respectively. Apple prices showed mixed results, with some varieties increasing slightly while mid-season apples decreased by 25%.
