European linguistic diversity celebrations
Overview
Educational and regional initiatives are highlighting linguistic diversity in Europe in connection with the European Day of Languages. Established in 2001 by the Council of Europe and the European Commission, the annual initiative aims to encourage lifelong learning and foster tolerance. While the European Union operates with 24 official languages, celebrations also recognize hundreds of regional and minority languages.
As the 2026 celebrations approach, the theme ‘Languages unite!’ emphasizes the role of multilingualism in fostering social inclusion, intercultural understanding, and democratic cohesion. This theme highlights how language learning can promote participation in public services and democratic life, serving as a tool to combat polarization. Beyond the 24 official EU languages, the continent is home to more than 200 languages, including approximately 225 indigenous languages and 60 regional or minority languages.
On September 26, 2026, the European Commission reinforced that learning foreign languages is a ‘vital tool for creating opportunities, fostering communication, and bridging cultural gaps.’ In Bulgaria, the Institute for Bulgarian Language ‘Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin’ organized a Language Fair in Sofia’s City Garden, featuring over 20 stalls with games, quizzes, and presentations of European traditions. In Italy, celebrations included literature-focused events in Venice and cultural performances in Siena.
In Poland, school-based activities have continued to support the ‘Languages unite’ theme. At the Ekonomik School Complex in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, students participated in geography quizzes, musical recognition, and culinary challenges involving European dishes and songs. Additionally, eighth-grade students attended workshops on mnemonic techniques led by experts from the Department of Applied Linguistics at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS).
