European nations' Eurovision participation considerations

Several European nations are evaluating their participation in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest.

In Slovenia, the public broadcaster RTV SLO is considering a return to the competition, which is scheduled to be hosted in Bulgaria. Slovenia previously withdrew from the 2026 contest and declined to broadcast the event due to concerns regarding Israel’s participation and its alignment with values of peace and equality. A decision is expected in the autumn following the adoption of new programming plans, with potential shifts in the Slovenian political landscape influencing the outcome.

In Hungary, the public media organization Duna Médiaszolgáltató has been invited to return to the contest for 2027. The European Broadcasting Union has offered a discounted participation fee and an extended application deadline. Hungary has not participated in the contest since 2019, amid speculation regarding government stances on LGBTQ+ issues.

Recent negotiations between the interim leadership of the reorganized Duna Médiaszolgáltató and the EBU have been described as positive. To facilitate a return, the EBU has offered a substantial reduction in the participation fee and an application deadline extension to December 7, 2026. However, participation is not yet confirmed; the final decision requires approval from the Independent Public Media Council and must subsequently be decided by the permanent leadership of the reorganized broadcaster.
