European railway digitalization and infrastructure projects

Overview

European railway operators are advancing digitalization and infrastructure through various technological and structural initiatives. In Austria, ÖBB has initiated a 65 million euro reconstruction of the Straßwalchen station and has been testing Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) to replace manual screw couplings for improved safety and efficiency.

In Germany, the AutomatedTrain project has demonstrated the technical feasibility of driverless operations. To support these advancements, rail operators are increasing investments in workforce development and vocational training.

The sector is moving toward formal implementation of new standards. Knorr-Bremse AG and ÖBB Rail Cargo Group have secured Europe’s first contract for DAC under the EU-funded PioDAC project, with plans to implement the technology in regular freight operations starting in 2028. This system is expected to increase competitiveness by enabling digital data and energy transfer between wagons.
