Of this, 94% (32.3 billion liters) had an alcohol content exceeding 0.5%, while 2.1 billion liters consisted of varieties below 0.5%. Recent data indicates a broader decline in the industry, with EU consumption dropping 3.2% between 2024 and 2025, and sitting 9.2% below 2019 levels. While Spain has mitigated these trends through the growth of non-alcoholic beer, other nations face shifting consumer habits. In Belgium, the industry is contesting proposed health regulations, including a change in sanitary warning slogans from ‘The abuse of alcohol harms health’ to ‘Alcohol harms health,’ alongside potential advertising restrictions. In Germany, the downturn is particularly pronounced. According to the Federal Statistical Office, alcoholic beer sales fell by six percent in 2025 compared to 2024, representing the sharpest decline since 1993. The number of German breweries also dropped to 1,415 in 2025, a decrease of 53 establishments from the previous year.
