Commemorations for Manzikert Victory in Ahlat, Bitlis

Overview

The Ahlat district of Bitlis has hosted various community and commemorative events. On August 15, the 1071 Masters Legends Tournament took place at the Ahlat City Stadium. Organized by Ahlat Spor Kulübü, the tournament featured amateur football matches for players over the age of 40 from Bitlis, Ahlat, Tatvan, and Adilcevaz. During the opening ceremony, Ahlat Mayor Yavuz Gülmez announced that the tournament would continue in future years under the auspices of the municipality.

Preparations have since progressed for the 955th anniversary of the Battle of Manzikert (Malazgirt Zaferi), scheduled for August 23 to 26. The celebrations are being held at the 150,000-square-meter Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Ahlat Millet Bahçesi and the Malazgirt Battlefield Historical National Park. The sites have been outfitted with Seljuk-themed decorations, a felt Han Otağı, and 50 thematic tents to showcase Turkish and Islamic cultural heritage.

As celebrations commence, the program includes traditional activities such as mounted archery, cirit, kökbörü, wrestling, and equestrian arts, alongside aerial displays by SOLOTÜRK, Çelik Kanatlar, and helicopters. The festivities also feature gastronomy events, local handicrafts, and cultural performances.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is scheduled to participate on August 25, where he is expected to address the international community. Following this address, the Turkish Cabinet is slated to hold its meeting in Ahlat for the third time. On August 26, the President is expected to visit Malazgirt to mark the historical date of the victory.
