Evros region reconstruction disputes

The reconstruction of the Evros region following the 2023 wildfires has become a point of intense political and administrative contention. Initially, Greek opposition parties, including SYRIZA and PASOK, criticized the government for allegedly abandoning a nearly 3 billion euro master plan in favor of a reduced budget of approximately 309.9 million euros. Critics and local officials raised concerns regarding a lack of transparency, unfulfilled infrastructure projects, and a perceived imbalance in funding that favors Alexandroupoli over Central and Northern Evros.

This tension escalated with the resignation of Stavros Menos from the Special Committee for the Development and Reconstruction of Evros. Menos cited disagreements over the direction of the Evros Masterplan, asserting that the core issue is not a lack of funding—noting that 3 billion euros in resources are available—but rather the failure to implement these funds through a cohesive, unified strategy. He warned that the current approach of executing fragmented, isolated projects threatens to undermine the original philosophy of the regional masterplan.
