Expansion of community social transport in Italy

Overview

Community-led social transport and support services are expanding across various Italian regions to assist elderly citizens, people with disabilities, and vulnerable families.

In Falconara, a partnership between Ambito Territoriale Sociale 12 and Fondazione ‘Progetti del Cuore’ has provided a new vehicle to facilitate free transport for essential services. Similarly, in Lugo, the social center ‘Il Tondo’ has increased its fleet to seven vehicles through corporate donations to support meal distribution and medical transport.

Demand for these services is rising in other areas. In Mozzo, the Trasporto Amico ODV association reported that weekly requests for medical and social transport assistance grew from 60 in 2024 to approximately 200 by 2026. Additionally, in Alcamo, a new door-to-door accompaniment service is being launched through a municipal co-design project to help residents with mobility issues visit cemeteries.
