Expansion of public veterinary services in Chile

Overview

Public veterinary services in Chile are undergoing expansion and modernization. In Valdivia, the municipality has updated its services to manage high demand by implementing a centralized call center to replace fixed-line systems and increasing clinical staff, including two veterinarians and two technicians, to focus on surgical procedures and post-operative care.

In the Santiago Metropolitan Region, the Governor of Santiago and the Mayor of San Joaquín have signed an agreement to construct the region’s first public clinical veterinary hospital. This $5,449 million CLP project will be located on land provided by San Joaquín and is designed to handle medium and high-complexity procedures, such as surgery and intensive care, which are not currently available through municipal primary care. The facility will feature consultation rooms, surgical theaters, and specialized recovery areas, operating under a municipal referral model for dogs and cats.
