Expansion of UNICEF child protection programs in Argentina
Overview
Argentina has seen an expansion of the MUNA (Municipios Unidos por la Niñez y la Adolescencia) program, a UNICEF-led initiative aimed at strengthening public policies and protecting the rights of children and adolescents.
In San Juan Province, Governor Marcelo Orrego signed a memorandum with UNICEF Argentina and the Defensoría de los Derechos de Niñas, Niños y Adolescentes, alongside the municipalities of Capital, Santa Lucía, Rivadavia, Chimbas, and Rawson. This agreement seeks to implement the MUNA program and strengthen the regional protection system. Separately, the Regional Football League of Río Cuarto launched an initiative to study and prevent violence in youth football through awareness workshops, cooperation with the Defensoría del Pueblo and a local university, and the use of the REFI digital entry-control system to monitor attendance.
In Buenos Aires Province, the initiative includes municipalities such as General Las Heras and Adolfo Alsina. General Las Heras formed an Executive Unit with representatives from various municipal areas, the provincial government, UNICEF, and Grupo Pharos to utilize a local self-diagnosis tool. Adolfo Alsina joined 37 other municipalities in the province by establishing an intersectoral Executive Table, involving departments such as Health, Culture, and Gender and Diversity, to identify priorities for promoting children’s rights with technical support from UNICEF and Grupo Pharos.
The program has also expanded to Santa Fe Province. The Municipality of Roldán officially joined the MUNA initiative following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Province of Santa Fe and UNICEF Argentina, attended by Governor Maximiliano Pullaro, to deepen collaborative work on youth and childhood policies.
