Extradition of Amritpal Singh from Moldova

Overview

Following a six-month international manhunt known as ‘Operation Eastern Reach’, Punjab Police successfully extradited Amritpal Singh, also known as Amrit Dalam, from the Republic of Moldova to India. Singh, a key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, had fled India in October 2024 using a forged passport. He was apprehended by Moldovan authorities on February 24, 2026, while attempting to cross the Otaci border into Ukraine.

After legal proceedings in Moldova and the rejection of Singh’s appeals, the extradition was completed, marking the first time Punjab Police has secured an extradition from a European nation. Singh faces 21 criminal cases in India, including charges of murder, narcotics offences, and violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

State officials have characterized these efforts as part of a broader crackdown on organized crime and drug trafficking. The state’s Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) has reportedly facilitated the deportation or extradition of 10 fugitives within a seven-month period.
