Extradition request against Mexican Senator Enrique Inzunza

Overview

Mexican Senator Enrique Inzunza Cázares has been absent from legislative sessions since late April following an extradition request from the United States. U.S. authorities, specifically the Department of Justice, have accused Inzunza of having links to the Sinaloa Cartel.

During his absence, fellow Morena party member Higinio Martínez suggested that Inzunza should take a formal leave of absence to avoid political complications. While Inzunza was physically absent, he reportedly continued to receive his official legislative salary and maintained that his technical team was managing his parliamentary responsibilities.

Inzunza has now announced he will return to perform his duties in person starting August 30, ahead of the ordinary session period beginning September 1. His planned return follows similar movements by Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, who is also among several officials identified in connection with alleged ties to the cartel.
