Extremadura regional budget and coalition governance

The regional government of Extremadura, led by a coalition of the People’s Party (PP) and Vox, has moved to approve its first budgets for the current legislature following a period of political tension and early elections.

Initial reports from the PP highlighted the €8.854 billion 2026 General Budget as a sign of political stability and swift governance. Spokesperson Luis Miguel Núñez cited economic indicators such as record-low unemployment and increased foreign investment, alongside infrastructure projects for hospitals and new housing measures.

To reach a budgetary consensus, the coalition implemented several adjustments. While the PP-led administration maintained funding for LGTBI support in rural areas and assistance for victims of human trafficking, the budget reflects Vox’s demands to reduce subsidies for unions, business organizations, international cooperation, and migrant assistance entities by 50%. The final budget also omits the principle of national priority for public aid and removes €150,000 in funding previously allocated to environmental groups.
