Extremadura school procurement and transport delays

In late July 2026, the Extremadura regional education department opened a €17 million open-tender for 356 school-transport routes for the 2026-27 academic year, aiming to avoid a repeat of the previous September’s service gap. The tender raised tariffs by nearly 25% and added a fuel price reference to cover cost increases, with offers evaluated on price, vehicle age and environmental quality. The deadline for submissions was set for 10 August.

A week later, in early August, the Junta de Extremadura announced a separate public-procurement contract worth €118,770.51 to furnish new classrooms and cafeterias in 18 schools and early-childhood centres. The contract, split into three lots for furniture, teaching materials and kitchen equipment, required delivery within 25 business days after signing. The equipment, including 215 desks and various kitchen appliances, is intended to support the upcoming term in locations such as Alcuéscar, Medellín, and Mérida.

However, by mid-August, the transport initiative faced setbacks. An administrative error regarding documentation has delayed the tendering process for the 356 routes by one month, sparking concerns among families regarding potential service disruptions in rural areas. Maribel Rengel, president of the Regional Extremaduran Federation of Parents' Associations (Freampa), noted that while the government shows political will, the error could have been avoided. Officials from the Regional Public Entity of Complementary Educational Services (Epesec) are currently communicating with parent representatives to ensure routes are guaranteed before classes begin in September.
