Eyüp Can Güner death investigation and trial

Overview

The legal proceedings regarding the death of 12-year-old Eyüp Can Güner in the Anamur district of Mersin have progressed through several court hearings. The incident occurred on July 29, 2025, when the child, who worked at a local restaurant, was reportedly chased by a 24-year-old suspect, N. U., through a passage. The child was subsequently found dead with injuries including head trauma, bone fractures, and internal organ damage.

In September 2026, an expert report was submitted to the Anamur High Criminal Court. The report indicated that while the death resulted from a fall, the fall may have been caused by “pressure applied to the upper part of the body.” During the hearing, the defendant maintained he did not see the child in the passage.

By the fifth hearing in October 2026, the prosecutor requested aggravated life imprisonment for the defendant, citing the charge of “intentional killing committed against a child” under Article 82/1e of the Turkish Penal Code. The prosecution argued that the child was pushed or fell due to external influence during the chase. The defendant, appearing via SEGBIS, claimed he was merely joking with the child and requested acquittal.

The victim’s mother, Güllü Can, stated that the murder has been clarified and expressed her hope that the defendant receives a sentence without any discretionary reductions. The family continues to seek the maximum possible sentence.
