Overview

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) and groups of ‘madres buscadoras’ (searching mothers) have initiated coordination to address the humanitarian crisis involving more than 130,000 reported missing persons in Mexico.

In late September, plans were announced for a meeting in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, titled ‘Gira por la Vida, capítulo México: Encuentro con madres buscadoras’. Organized by the Espacio de Conciencia y Memoria, the gathering was intended to include members of the Zapatista Sixth Commission and served as a precursor to a planned EZLN delegation trip to Mexico City.

Following these developments, searching families collectives associated with the ‘Glorieta de los Desaparecidos’ in Mexico City issued a formal invitation to the EZLN to meet on December 6. The collectives expressed a desire to discuss mutual actions and share efforts to denounce the missing persons crisis in a spirit of respect and solidarity.
