Falun 2027 World Ski Championships broadcasting uncertainty

Overview

The organizing committee for the 2027 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun continues to face uncertainty regarding broadcasting rights. Because the International Ski Federation (FIS) owns the rights, the lack of a finalized agreement is impacting arena planning, camera placement, and snow management.

Kajsa Sjösvärd, CEO of the Falun championships, has warned that delays in securing television rights could lead to increased operational costs, which may subsequently affect sponsorship deals and ticket prices for spectators.

Pernilla Bonde, Secretary General of the Swedish Ski Association, has criticized the FIS for the delay in the sales process, describing the situation as ‘jättedåligt’ (very bad). Despite numerous meetings between the Swedish Ski Association and FIS to emphasize the need for a resolution, the responsibility for selling the rights remains solely with the FIS.

As the late August deadline passed without a finalized agreement, concerns regarding a potential TV blackout in Sweden and Norway persisted. In Norway, legal requirements mandate that major championships be broadcast on free-to-air channels reaching over 90 percent of the population.

By mid-September, with approximately five months remaining before the event begins on February 24, no media deals had been finalized in Sweden or Norway. Former cross-country skiing champion Petter Northug warned that the unresolved rights could lead to ‘chaos’ for viewers. Northug noted that the fragmented landscape of sports broadcasting, where rights are often split between providers such as NRK, TV 2, and Viaplay, makes it difficult for casual fans to identify which channels are hosting specific events.
