Fatal container vehicle accidents in Jharkhand

Overview

A series of fatal road accidents involving heavy containers has been reported in the Jharkhand region.

In mid-August, a speeding container lost control near Lukuiya Valley in the Latehar district, striking a motorcycle and overturning onto a passenger tempo. The collision resulted in approximately seven deaths and several serious injuries. Investigations indicated that high speed was the primary cause of the crash.

In early September, a similar incident occurred in the Chuttupalu Valley of the Ramgarh district. A container truck experienced brake failure while traveling from Ranchi toward Ramgarh, colliding with a car and crushing it. This accident resulted in one death and five injuries, involving the family of a local DSP. Local residents have referred to the Chuttupalu Valley as the ‘valley of death’ due to the frequency of accidents involving heavy vehicles, prompting questions regarding road safety measures by the National Highways Authority of India.
