Fatal motorcycle collisions involving taxis in Greece
Overview
A series of fatal motorcycle collisions involving taxis has been reported in Greece. In Voula, Attica, a 39-year-old motorcyclist was declared brain dead at KAT Hospital in Athens following a collision with a taxi that attempted an illegal U-turn on Poseidonos Avenue. The 32-year-old driver, who claimed his GPS misled him regarding the legality of the maneuver, was released under restrictive conditions, including an indefinite driving license revocation and a requirement for monthly police appearances. He faces charges of dangerous driving and causing bodily harm through negligence.
The victim’s family has decided to donate his organs—including his kidneys, liver, corneas, and lungs—through the Greek Transplantation Organization.
In a separate incident in Rethymno, Crete, a 21-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision with a taxi in the Platanias area. The 61-year-old taxi driver was arrested and faces charges of manslaughter and dangerous driving. This fatality marks the 21st traffic-related death on Crete since the start of 2026.
Other recent motorcycle-related incidents in the country include a rider in Mykonos who collided with the rear of a bus while distracted by a mobile phone and not wearing a helmet, and another motorcyclist who was hospitalized after losing control on the Thessaloniki–Modiánies National Road near Cosmos.
