Fatal motorway collision in Lagonegro, Italy

Overview

A violent multi-vehicle collision on the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo near the Lagonegro junction in the province of Potenza resulted in the death of a 23-year-old military officer.

Identified as Marco Curia, a First Class Sailor serving with the maritime district office of San Marco di Castellabate, the victim was driving one of two cars involved in the crash against a heavy goods vehicle. The accident occurred shortly after midnight on the northbound carriageway. While the truck driver was largely uninjured and a passenger in the second car was treated for minor injuries, emergency responders were unable to save Curia.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Lagonegro has opened an investigation into the incident and ordered the seizure of all vehicles involved to reconstruct the dynamics of the crash.
