Fatal traffic accident in Siófok

Overview

On August 11, 2026, a fatal traffic accident occurred on Batthyány Street in Siófok, Hungary, when a passenger car struck a middle-aged cyclist. The cyclist died at the scene, while four occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries after the car veered off the road and overturned.

Subsequent investigations and a reconstruction by judicial expert Sándor Boncsér revealed that the driver, an 18-year-old with a license held for only two months, was operating a Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 at approximately 100 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. The vehicle reportedly struck a light pole following the collision near a pedestrian crossing.

In response to the incident, Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy noted that the tragedy highlights a need to review legislation, specifically regarding the fact that extreme speeding is not currently classified as a crime in itself.
