Fatal vehicle accidents in Mumbai

Overview

A series of fatal high-speed vehicle accidents has been reported in Mumbai.

In late August, a 45-year-old driver was arrested in Bandra West after a speeding vehicle struck and killed a young boy near Jijamata Garden. The driver was reportedly distracted by a mobile phone call at the time of the collision.

On September 20, a high-speed BMW crash occurred on the Mumbai Coastal Road near Lotus Jetty. The accident, which allegedly involved overspeeding, occurred at approximately 5:20 AM as the vehicle traveled from Marine Drive toward Haji Ali. The driver reportedly lost control, causing the car to strike a divider and plunge approximately 75 feet from an elevated stretch of the road into a construction area. The impact was severe, causing the vehicle to tear through a bridge signboard and suffer extensive structural damage.

The crash resulted in the deaths of three individuals: 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal, 17-year-old Dhirya Seth, and 19-year-old Aditya Jakasania. A 23-year-old occupant, Aditya Oswal, remains in critical condition in the trauma ward at Nair Hospital.

Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into the crash. This incident has renewed discussions regarding safety on the 10.58-kilometer high-speed corridor and follows recent concerns regarding high-performance vehicles speeding on the Coastal Road, including police action in early September involving luxury cars racing in the Marine Drive-Southbound tunnel.
